Closure of the Computer Science Branch Library on 15 December 2011

The Computer Science branch library in Fürstenallee will be closed on 15 December 2011.

The branch library was created in 1995 as a reference library at the request of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute staff in order to relativise the spatial distance between the campus and Fürstenallee, which was once perceived as a disadvantage, and to have a selection of subject-relevant literature 'on site'.

The dissolution of the Computer Science Branch Library, the only location of the University Library not on the Warburger Straße campus, is being carried out at the request of the Heinz Nixdorf Institute and on the basis of a decision by the University's Presidential Board. The decision to close the library was made against the background of scarce space resources in Fürstenallee in consideration of other, higher-prioritised usage requirements - and not least due to the assessment communicated between staff and students that the supply of literature to staff and students in Fürstenallee is now mainly provided by electronic information media licensed and provided by the University Library and by free Internet resources.

The books and journals in the Computer Science Branch Library that appear relevant for current and future research, teaching and studies will be successively transferred to the University Library's collection on the Warburger Straße campus with immediate effect.

In future, they will be available for borrowing or use in the library's rooms during its extensive opening hours as part of the University Library's total collection of around 1.75 million media units. The University Library is endeavouring to increasingly develop into an attractive place to work and learn - with a mix of electronic and printed information media, with opportunities for concentrated work or learning in groups as well as advice and training.

Break discs in the library - New workplace regulations at the university library

The University Library is a central place of learning and work at the university. On average, around 4,200 people visit the University Library every day. During examination periods, there can be up to 7,000 users a day.

The University Library can only provide around 530 workstations, which are far from sufficient, highly coveted and often fiercely contested. Understandably, but unfairly, study and workstations are 'reserved' in the morning hours with books, notebooks and other work documents and are not vacated during the lunch break or lectures and are therefore not used for hours.

To partially reduce this problem, the University Library is introducing break discs with immediate effect. In principle, these work like car parking discs: as soon as a user leaves a workstation, they must set up a break disc and place it on the desk. If no break disc is placed or the maximum break duration (30 minutes or 60 minutes during lunchtime between 12 noon and 2 pm) is exceeded, other users may take over the space. Tables without a break disc or with an expired break disc can be occupied, i.e. materials and notebooks can be moved to the side.

With the introduction of the break discs, which were also requested by students and which are also used in other university libraries, the University Library is trying to contribute to a fair utilisation of the limited number of available workstations.

However, a solution to the space problem, which could become even more acute in the coming years as student numbers increase, will only be possible through an appropriate structural expansion of the University Library.

New: Citavi Team version available

With the new Citavi version 3.1, the Citavi Team version is now available to all students and staff at Paderborn University. This allows members of a team to work on Citavi projects at the same time.

If you would like to use Citavi for the first time, you must apply for a new licence key via www.citavi.com/upb; this is automatically valid for the team version. If you are already working with an older version of Citavi, you will need to update to Citavi 3.1 and also request a team licence key. To be able to work on a team project together with colleagues, you will also need a shared storage location where you can save your team projects.

You can find detailed information about this new offer at http://www.ub.uni-paderborn.de/recherchieren/citavi/

E-books: Elsevier's entire title portfolio released

EVIDENCE BASED SELECTION of e-books: As part of a new business model for e-books, the entire portfolio of titles published by Elsevier up to and including Copyright Year 2010 is now available - a total of around 8,400 titles. In the autumn of this year, a decision will be made on which titles will be permanently included in the University Library's range of electronic full texts, taking into account usage statistics.

The individual titles are listed in the Paderborn University catalogue: ubaleph.uni-paderborn.de/F/

Reservation of workstations in the library

Free workspaces are still rare at the university at the end of this semester and are therefore in high demand. The university library in particular is becoming increasingly popular as a place to study and work. Unfortunately, at the moment it is increasingly noticeable that numerous work tables in the library with books and documents are already reserved in the morning. However, the tables then remain unused for hours. This behaviour is very unfair to all other students.

In order to achieve better utilisation of the workstations, the unused desks blocked in this way will be cleared by library staff with immediate effect. The documents and materials on the desk will be stored in transparent plastic bags and can be collected from the information desk of the respective subject library.

In the interests of fair cooperation and a good working atmosphere, we ask all library users for their understanding of these measures.
