University library gets a little bigger. New work and study spaces created

At the beginning of the 2013/14 winter semester, the University Library received its first major expansion of space since its opening in spring 1977 with the provision of additional space in Building J.

This expansion has enabled, among other things, the creation of 45 additional workstations, an expansion of the shelf space for the freely accessible books and journals of the departments of Art, Music and Media Studies, the institution of new office space (which will lead to the conversion of previous office space into user areas) and the provision of extensive space for the University Archive, which is integrated into the University Library.

For the expansion of the workstations, the University Library developed a new interior design concept with a view to the changed working and learning habits of the students, which is characterised above all by the quality of the materials used and creates a significantly above-average quality of stay - and thus significantly expresses the high esteem of the university and the library for the students working and learning here.

The new workstations, which make optimum use of the available space along the window façade, the standing research workstations, the information desk and the small lounge field were developed by the university library together with a service provider. The purist form of the new workstations is complemented and perfected by discreet functional elements, such as LED desk lamps with dimmers and sockets/lock anchor units (for securing private notebooks with a lock) specially developed for the University Library. The seating with cantilever chairs will make it possible to sit comfortably for longer periods in a writing position.

The astonishing renaissance of the library as a place in the digital age has led to new library buildings and future-oriented library and learning centres being created as visible landmarks of knowledge at many universities in Germany and abroad. Paderborn University Library has set itself the goal of developing and converting its entire user area into a needs-orientated and future-proof place of work and learning through a high-quality, aesthetically pleasing and at the same time functional design that is - in the truest sense of the word - 'worth seeing'.

Market of opportunities on 04.11.2013

New lockers in the University Library!

Just in time for the start of the winter semester, the University Library is providing its visitors with 708 lockers of various sizes in the entrance area for the secure storage of their coats, bags and similar items.

This fulfils a request made by many users over the years.

The usage regulations for the lockers in the university foyer in front of the library apply to the use of the lockers: http: //digital.ub.uni-paderborn.de/ihd/periodical/structure/472928.

Please ensure in particular that

  • perishable food or dangerous objects may not be deposited in the lockers,
  • the University Library and Paderborn University are not liable for items deposited in the subject areas,
  • the lockers must be emptied daily. Every day after the University Library closes (Mondays to Fridays at midnight, Saturdays and Sundays at 9pm), locked lockers are cleared by the security service.

Please bring your own padlock!

The library baskets are still available for use within the University Library: you will find them directly in the field of the lockers. One final request: If you no longer need the library basket, please leave it in the designated places.

If you have any questions about the lockers, please contact the Paderborn University Library's local lending department (phone 05251/60-2015, e-mail: ortsleihe@ub.uni-paderborn.de).

  • Display of availability in the results list
Whether a copy of a title is available or not is now displayed directly in the results list.

If you look at secondary forms in the detailed view, the information relating to the secondary form is now displayed in the Details tab.

April 2013

Upgrade to Citavi 4

The reference management programme Citavi has been offering an upgrade to Citavi 4 since 29 April 2013.

This new version of the programme includes an add-in for Microsoft Word. This allows references to be inserted directly into Word, eliminating the previously cumbersome process of using the placeholder function in Word.

The new Word Add-In for Citavi version 4 is supported in the Office programmes 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 365. Windows XP users must stick with version 3.

In addition, the Citavi Picker for the Google Chrome browser can be used with this new version. You can find out what else has changed compared to the last version directly from Citavi.

You do not need to request a new licence key to install Citavi 4.

Information on installing Citavi 4 can be found on our Citavi website .

Citavi - Licence extended until 2016

Since 2008, Paderborn University Library has offered all students and staff at Paderborn University a free campus licence for the reference management programme Citavi. The system supports literature research from specialist databases and library catalogues as well as the effective indexing and integration of research results in academic papers. In addition, Citavi enables effective task planning: from the recording of upcoming tasks with details of deadlines, importance and work status to the creation of task lists.

The University Library has now extended the Citavi licence for a further three years until 30.04.2016.

If you are already a user of the Citavi campus licence, the new licence key will be sent automatically by email to your university email address.

As a new user, however, you have the option of requesting the software and licence key free of charge on our Citavi website. In the licence email you receive from SAS/Citavi, please select and copy the entire text (CTRL + A and CTRL + C) and then click on the Licence data link in the Citavi start window. The licence key is automatically copied from the cache.
