University Library participates in the BMBF project Locomotion at Paderborn University

The Locomotion - LOw-Cost Multimedia Organisation and ProducTION project was launched at Paderborn University on 1 July 2005.

Locomotion is one of a small number of projects sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the eLearning Services for Science programme, out of a total of 300 applications submitted.

More than 30 employees from science and administration are involved in the project. A special feature is the planned close cooperation between three faculties, the administration and the central operating units University Library and Centre for Information and Media Technologies.

The project, which consists of six sub-projects

(1) Project management
(2) Module and examination administration
(3) Knowledge organisation
(4) Skills development
(5) Organisational development
(6) Infrastructure development

is headed by the Chancellor and the Vice-Rector for Research and Junior Academics. The IKM Council is also involved in cross-institutional and university-wide issues in the field of information, communication and media (IKM). In this way, the project is directly anchored in the university management.

The aim of the project is to develop an adaptable process-based support environment for eLearning (in the sense of enhanced learning). Locomotion focuses on the processes of module and examination administration as well as knowledge organisation. The diverse eLearning activities that take place within these processes are to be technologically linked and organisationally supported by service units. The service units are to represent new, competence-based organisational units that enable the bundling of processes that do not yet exist or are distributed across different organisational units and are to offer integrated support functions for the processes mentioned as competent contacts.

  • The Module and Examination Management service unit is intended to provide end-to-end organisational support for the planning and delivery of courses.
  • The Integrated Knowledge Organisation service unit will support all functions for the production, publication, long-term management and development of media products.

By focusing on everyday processes, the increased use of eLearning, eTeaching and eCollaboration is to be achieved across the board, the quality of teaching, learning and testing is to be sustainably increased and the handling of the associated processes is to be optimised. To this end, three cross-sectional tasks are being implemented in accordance with the three perspectives of competence, organisation and infrastructure development.

The University Library is participating in the project as part of sub-project 3: Knowledge Organisation and here in the development of the above-mentioned service unit Integrated Knowledge Organisation.

Building on its "classic" core competences acquired and applied over decades in the field of commercial print media and, in recent years, increasingly in the field of commercial electronic information media, it will - also in the sense of the extended tasks assigned to it by the new administrative regulations of 31 March 2005 - develop an integrated knowledge organisation.03.2005 (§ 2.2) - to develop and productively implement a model that enables the collection and cataloguing of high-quality knowledge resources that are created at the university and appear "worthy of publication", and to make them available for science, teaching and studies on a long-term basis via document servers.

In addition, the University Library plans to make the knowledge resources it provides directly available for e-learning scenarios in the form of electronic seminar apparatuses.

The funding from the BMBF amounts to approx. 1.5 million euros for a three-year period. The Rectorate of the University is sponsoring the project with an additional 0.6 million euros. The individual institutions of the university involved in the project are also making their own contributions totalling approx. 0.8 million euros. The University Library is involved with one position, and the Rectorate is also sponsoring the activities of the University Library by providing half a position.

More detailed information on the project and its sub-areas: locomotion.uni-paderborn.de. Interim results will also be documented here in future.

Information on the progress of the funded project will be made available on the Internet portal for BMBF funding for new media in education: www.medien-bildung.net [Category: Projects 2005ff]

Paderborn University Library leads the way in NRW

Bertelsmann Stiftung and German Library Association (DBV) compare the performance of university libraries nationwide

In a nationwide performance comparison between academic libraries in the group of single-tier university libraries, Paderborn University Library has achieved 9th place out of a total of 26 libraries compared in this category and thus the best ranking among the participating university libraries in North Rhine-Westphalia.

This year, for the second time, the Library Index (BIX) measures the performance of academic libraries in terms of resources ("What infrastructure can the library offer for use?"), utilisation ("How are the services offered used?"), efficiency ("Are the services provided cost-efficiently?") and development ("Is there sufficient potential for necessary developments?"). The multidimensional ranking enables the libraries to compare themselves on the basis of key performance indicators and to learn from each other. 61 university and university of applied sciences libraries from various federal states took part in this year's BIX.

Paderborn University Library achieved the best position of all participating North Rhine-Westphalian university libraries in this "ranking" with 9th place. In the field of "Development", the University Library achieved a good 6th place, which shows that the University Library has the potential to adapt quickly to current development trends. A particular focus is on the provision of electronic holdings - a field that is becoming increasingly important. The Paderborn University Library invests 47% of its acquisition budget in the acquisition and provision of electronic media and services. This is by far the highest figure in this category.

The University Library has taken part in this voluntary nationwide performance comparison in order to determine where the library stands and to be able to better assess its own strengths and weaknesses on the basis of key figures and comparative results.

It does this in the knowledge that excellent universities need excellent libraries - service facilities that ensure the supply of the university, its research and teaching with the necessary information media - and that the performance and reputation of the library are essential building blocks for the performance and "image" of a university. For example, the university library can be one of the factors that play a decisive role for future students when choosing where to study.

The results of the BIX were calculated by the Institute for Applied Social Sciences (infas) on behalf of the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the DBV. This summer, the Bertelsmann Stiftung's funding of the BIX will end as planned, and the project will be taken over by its co-operation partner, the German Library Association (DBV).

Redesign of the Business, Economics and Social Sciences Library

The Business, Economics and Social Sciences Library is currently being modernised.

During the work phase, which is expected to last until the end of October, some of the workstations will not be accessible for a longer period of time.

Noise pollution is also to be expected throughout level 5.

Temporarily, the bound journals will be moved to the stacks. A direct link to the group study room from the staircase will be created, the walls will be painted a lighter colour, new carpeting will be laid, sun protection will be improved, most of the furniture will be replaced and the existing stock will be rearranged according to a new concept.

The aim of these measures is to offer you, our customers, a more attractive and pleasant learning and working atmosphere than before.

Orders placed outside these times will be processed on the next working day.

New service in the HBZ union catalogue

The Union Catalogue of Libraries in North Rhine-Westphalia (HBZ Union Catalogue) now offers you a new function that makes it easier for you to access our holdings.

If you have found a title in the union catalogue that is held by the University Library, you can now click on the Paderborn University Library siglum (466 PB: UB) in the holdings display to not only find information on the shelfmark of the items held by us, but you can also access our item list directly via the link to the local library catalogue. There you can immediately find out about the loan status and, if necessary, place a reservation.
