"Focus on IT and media - ... through your studies with us!" - Info CD for first-semester students
The Audiovisual Media Centre (AVZM), the University Library (UB) and the Centre for IT Services (ZIT) have jointly produced a CD-ROM entitled "Focus on IT and Media - ... with us through your studies!" and published 3,500 copies.
The CD contains information on the wide range of services offered by the three institutions as well as some very useful freeware programmes. It is particularly intended for first-semester students and has been enclosed with the information folders for first-semester students.
In addition, 500 copies are intended for free distribution to other interested students - e.g. "library newcomers" - and are available at the ZIT and the University Library (information desk).
Paderborn University Library ranks among the top in nationwide performance comparison
In the first nationwide performance comparison "Library Index for Academic Libraries (BIX-WB)", Paderborn University Library is ranked 9th in the category "single-tier university libraries" and 2nd in the NRW comparison - after Bielefeld University Library and well ahead of the former comprehensive university libraries in Siegen and Duisburg-Essen and Dortmund University Library.
After the performance of public libraries was measured for the fifth time this year by the Library Index compiled by the Bertelsmann Foundation and the German Library Association, the performance of 50 academic libraries (single and two-tier university libraries and libraries of universities of applied sciences) that took part in this nationwide performance comparison has now also been surveyed and compared for the first time.
The "target dimensions" of resources ("What infrastructure can the library offer for use?"), utilisation ("How are the services offered used?"), efficiency ("Are the services provided cost-efficiently?") and development ("Is there sufficient potential for necessary developments?") were measured and evaluated.
In the target dimensions of resources, efficiency and development, Paderborn University Library is one of the top 10 single-tier university libraries in Germany. In the "development" target dimension, it is even ranked 2nd and 1st in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In the "resources" target dimension, it is one of the top 7 libraries nationwide and ranks 2nd in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The BIX places particular emphasis on the provision of electronic information media, as these are playing an increasingly central role for students, teachers and researchers. The Paderborn University Library achieved the highest value of all libraries participating in the performance comparison nationwide with 35.26 per cent for the corresponding indicator "Proportion of expenditure on electronic holdings in relation to total expenditure on information provision".
The extensive opening hours of the university library - at 100 hours per week, one of the most generous in the whole of Germany - have a very positive effect.
In times of increasingly scarce resources and growing financial difficulties for academic libraries, which make it ever more difficult to acquire sufficient electronic and printed media for study, teaching and research, the efficient use of financial resources is becoming ever more important. Among other things, BIX also takes into account the personnel costs that a library incurs for the provision of media per user: The lower the expenditure per user, the more cost-efficient the library's work is. Here, Paderborn University Library is the second most effective library in North Rhine-Westphalia after Dortmund University Library.
The importance of continuous staff training is documented by the indicator "training hours per employee". Here, Paderborn University Library achieves the highest value of all North Rhine-Westphalian university libraries with around 25.1 hours, and ranks third in a nationwide comparison.
Three measured indicators clearly show the problem areas of Paderborn University Library:
At 439 square metres per 1,000 users, it has significantly less public space (and therefore user workstations) than all other libraries; this value is only undercut by Cottbus University Library, which, however, also has only a third as many students as Paderborn as users.
Paderborn University Library has the fourth worst value for the indicator "library staff per 1,000 users"; this makes the library's efforts to intensify contact with its customers - in particular through increased training programmes - more difficult.
Unfortunately, the University Library also ranks fourth to last with regard to the indicator "Expenditure on literature and information per 1,000 users", where it is noticeable that all single-tier university libraries in NRW participating in the BIX-WB are in the lower half of the ranking. If the libraries in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg in particular perform very well in the BIX nationwide performance comparison, this is primarily due to the fact that they have had significantly higher annual budgets for decades than the libraries in NRW and (therefore also) Paderborn University Library.

"How old printer cartridges are turned into new school computers ... Collecting together for the school"
University Library and ASTA support collection campaign of the Westphalian School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Büren
Under the above-mentioned motto, the Westphalian School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Büren has been taking part in a collection campaign for two years, collecting empty ink and toner cartridges from printers, photocopiers and fax machines and, more recently, old mobile phones. The so-called empty cartridges are not waste, but high-quality recyclable materials that can be cleaned and refilled. The school receives teaching and learning materials for various teaching areas as well as computers and computer accessories for the collected empty modules. In view of some outdated or missing media and with a view to the new school building planned for 2006, this collection campaign will enable the school to modernise and expand its media stock, an important building block in the support of hearing-impaired pupils.
Everyone can support the school in reducing the burden on the environment and improving the equipment with teaching and learning materials.
The University Library and the ASTA of Paderborn University are supporting the campaign by placing collection boxes with "Meike, the collection dragon" in the entrance area of the library and in front of the ASTA's teaching materials shop.
The school is also happy to arrange contacts with companies, offices, administrations, etc., where larger quantities of empty modules may accumulate. A contact address can be found on the collection boxes.
Contact: Michael Arns, Deputy Head of the Westphalian School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Büren (Tel. 02951/2343 - Mail: armich@web.de)
Further information on the collection campaign can be found at www.sammeldrache.de.

New catalogue and new lending system
After extensive preparatory work, the new catalogue and the new lending system of the University Library went live on 01.03.2004.
What are the advantages of the new system for you?
- Our catalogue is no longer updated every 14 days, but is now updated daily.
- The new catalogue offers significantly improved search options.
- The processing status of a book (e.g. "ordered", "in progress", ...) is currently displayed.
- The receipt of journal issues of the current year is recorded in the catalogue.
- The previously available personal services (account information, renewal, reservations, e-mail and password changes) have been expanded.
- From now on, orders and deliveries made via the online interlibrary loan service of the Digital Library will be displayed in your user account.
Please note the following changes (some of which are provisional!).
- User number
At the beginning of the user number, enter "P" instead of "GHP". - Extension of the loan period If a medium is not reserved, the loan period can be extended as often as required, but for a maximum of one year.
- Reservations
Any number of reservations can be placed for each item. The number is no longer limited to three. - Blocking the user account
As soon as fees of 10 euros or more are incurred, the user account is automatically blocked immediately. Previously, the automatic blocking only occurred after one week, regardless of the amount of the fees. - Desktop devices
The loan period for media booked for a desktop device is limited to three months.
By popular request, access to our new catalogue is now only possible in encrypted form. You must therefore accept our certificate. To avoid having to confirm the certificate every time you use the catalogue, you can import the certificate chain in full. Please also refer to the 'Certificates' info page.
The new catalogue has been carefully tested. Nevertheless, it is possible that one or two errors may be discovered during "live operation". Please report errors, questionable results etc. by e-mail to Mrs Kriesten.

On 01.03.2004 the library will introduce a new lending system with a new WWW catalogue
What are the advantages of the system for you?
- Our catalogue will no longer be updated every 14 days, but on a daily basis.
- The new catalogue will offer improved search options.
- The processing status of a book (e.g. "ordered", "awaiting", "in progress") will be displayed.
- The receipt of journal issues of the current year will be recorded in the catalogue.
- The personal services already available (account information, renewal, reservations, e-mail and password changes) will be expanded.
- In future, orders and deliveries made via the online interlibrary loan service of the Digital Library will be displayed in your user account.
The following regulations apply for a transitional period until the end of February 2004:
- Since 1 December, the number of reservations possible per copy has already been reduced from two to one. Once the new lending system goes live, the number of reservations per copy will be increased again.
- For technical reasons, the works newly registered by the library in January and February 2004 cannot be displayed in our current catalogue. However, you can search for these titles with a local shelfmark in the Digital Library.
- Alternatively, you can also search the North Rhine-Westphalian union database. You can limit your search to Paderborn holdings using the "advanced search" with the "libraries" filter.
