Christmas closure in the period from 24 December 2021 to 2 January 2022
As part of the university closure, the university library will also be closed from 24 December 2021 to 2 January 2022 by decision of the university management.
From 3 January 2022, the University Library will reopen with the current opening hours (Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 19:00).
The loan periods of borrowed media will be adjusted accordingly, please check your library account if you have borrowed or reserved media.
Books for short-term loans can be borrowed from 23/12/2021 to 03/01/2022.
Of course, you will have access to our electronic services such as the catalogue, library account, databases and electronic full texts via WWW during the closure periods.
Slight extension of opening hours from 06.12.2021
From 6 December 2021, the library will be open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 19:00.
Writing advice again on Wednesdays at the library information centre
From 3 November 2021, the Writing Competence Centre's student writing advice service will be offering writing advice at the Information Centre in the library every Wednesday from 09:00 to 11:00.
We are pleased that after the corona-related interruption, the student writing counselling service at the library as a place to learn and work will once again support students of all faculties and semesters 'at eye level' with questions about academic writing.
Further information on writing advice can be found on the homepage of the Writing Competence Centre.
For library-related questions, such as searching for literature in catalogues and databases, we are available at the library's Information Centre from Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 15:00.
UPDATE: Due to the current corona situation, consultation hours will be offered online again from the end of November.
Changed opening hours on 01.11.2021
The University Library will be closed on Monday, 01.11.2021 (All Saints' Day).
Of course, you will have access to our electronic services such as the catalogue, library account, databases and electronic full texts via WWW on this holiday.
Rearrangement of entrance level and level 2
The remodelling and renovation work on level 2 of the library building is almost complete. From 22 November, the shelving will be installed and the holdings of the Philosophy, Psychology, Education Studies and Religious Studies subject areas will be successively relocated to their final location on Level 2. The relocation work will cause disruption and noise disturbance on the entrance level and Level 2. We ask for your understanding.
Expansion of the range of services
From 4 October, proof of compliance with the 3G regulation will be required to visit the library. Only those who have been vaccinated, recovered or tested negative will be allowed to enter the library.
Restrictions on on-site services imposed in connection with the pandemic can therefore be lifted. There is no need to reserve/book workstations.
Courses in the winter semester 2021/2022
In the winter semester 2021/2022, the University Library will once again offer its tried-and-tested range of online courses, which you can take part in conveniently and securely from the location of your choice. In addition, the University Library will successively offer face-to-face courses for small groups again, adapted to the current conditions and needs.
You can find the current range of courses on our training website.
At the beginning of the winter semester, we will be offering our new video "Short introduction to using Paderborn University Library".
Citavi licence extended to include web version on a trial basis
In addition to Citavi 6 for Windows, the Paderborn University Library is offering all students and members of Paderborn University free trial access to Citavi Web, initially until the end of October.
Citavi Web is compatible with Mac OS, Windows and Linux operating systems.
Projects that are created in Citavi Web can also be edited in Citavi for Windows - or in another direction.
However, Citavi Web does not currently have the same range of functions as Citavi for Windows. You can find more information on this on the page "Missing functions in Citavi Web".
Start Citavi Web with your existing Citavi account. If you have not yet created an account, register using your personal Paderborn University email address (e.g. @uni-paderborn.de or @mail.uni-paderborn.de).
Interlibrary loan requests for journal articles and sections from books can only be sent directly by e-mail until 31 July 2021
Since 25 January 2021, interlibrary loan orders for journal articles could be delivered directly to customers by e-mail due to a temporary exception. Unfortunately, this service-oriented exception will end on 31 July 2021, and from 1 August 2021, journal articles ordered via interlibrary loan will have to be picked up again in the library at home as a paper printout.
The background:
Article deliveries in interlibrary loan must be remunerated in accordance with Section 60h of the German Copyright Act.
This remuneration and a number of framework conditions are set out in a remuneration agreement (General Agreement 'Copy Delivery in Intra-Library Interlibrary Loan') concluded between the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) and the collecting societies (including VG WORT). Section 1 (1) stipulates that "intra-library lending [...] includes the transfer from library to library and the subsequent delivery of the physical copy of the work (after printing, if applicable) to non-commercial end users".
In a supplementary agreement, the collecting societies (including VG WORT) temporarily waived the need to hand over physical copies of works (printouts) in the course of the Corona pandemic - which allowed libraries or the library network centres to send article deliveries in electronic form to 'end users' in intra-library lending from 25 January 2021 to 31 July 2021.
We very much regret that negotiations between the KMK and the collecting societies have not succeeded in extending the supplementary agreement.
Slight expansion of the University Library's on-site services from 26 July 2021
From Monday, 26 July 2021, we may release 100 instead of 50 individual workstations.
Wearing a medical mask in accordance with the CoronaSchVO is still mandatory in the library's user areas. Only within the individual workrooms (Building I) may this be dispensed with.
Construction measures
Extensive building work is currently being carried out in and around the university library:
The external façade is being repainted, the ageing and repeatedly defective external blinds are being replaced, level 2 is being remodelled and the lifts are being refurbished.
- During the renovation work on the lifts, which is likely to take several months, only one lift will be available at any one time.
- Some of the work on the blinds will require the ceiling panels to be opened in order to lay new electrical cables.
- The monographs in the Philosophy and Psychology subject areas have been relocated to the already renovated part of level 2, and the next construction phase will involve remodelling the part that has been freed up as a result.
All construction work will cause disruption and noise nuisance from time to time. We ask for your understanding.
Digitised material from Paderborn University Library now also in the German Digital Library
In its digitisation centre, Paderborn University Library digitises copyright-free publications from its own holdings and from the holdings of partners, in particular from the holdings of the Paderborn Archbishop's Academic Library.
It makes its (retro) digital copies - currently around 4,500 volumes - available via its Digital Collections as open access documents for free, public use on the Internet.
From now on, these digital copies will also be indexed in the German Digital Library (DDB).
The German Digital Library aims to provide all interested parties with free access to Germany's cultural and scientific heritage via the Internet, i.e. to millions of books, archival documents, images, sculptures, pieces of music and other audio documents, films and sheet music. As a centralised national portal, the DDB is intended to link the digital offerings of all German cultural and scientific institutions. In this way, the DDB aims to secure Germany's connectivity and competitiveness in science, research and education, as well as making its unique cultural heritage and knowledge conveniently accessible to all via a centralised point of contact.
Primo Central goes, the Central Discovery Index comes
In addition to the conventional catalogue search, we have also been offering the Primo Central search in our catalogue for a long time. Primo Central is now being replaced by the successor product, the new Central Discovery Index (CDI).
While the search via the "Catalogue" tab searches the holdings of the literature available in the University Library (e.g. books, journals, e-books, e-journals, CDs and DVDs), the search via the "Central Discovery Index" (CDI) tab provides metadata and, in some cases, online access to commercial content and open access content from electronic journals, e-books, databases, etc.. As with Primo Central, the CDI can be searched using title keywords, author names, keywords etc. and then narrowed down using the facets offered. The LinkResolver SFX or alternatively direct linking takes you to the desired full text.
Further information about the CDI can be found in our blog "News about the catalogue".
Extensions to the on-site services of the University Library from 8 June 2021
From 8 June 2021, the library's services will be expanded as follows:
- The library will be open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00.
- The book supervision scanners in the user area will be available again.
- It will again be possible to pay fees by EC card at the automatic pay station.
- Individual workstations and rooms will be available for use again to a very limited extent. Individual workstations can be used by all users with a valid library card and can be reserved up to 3 days in advance. The current occupancy of the workstations will be visible in the occupancy/reservation system. In the university library and at the workstations there is an obligation to wear a medical mask in accordance with the CoronaSchVO.
- The use of the microfilm scanner will be possible again(after prior registration and appointment by e-mail: ortsleihe@ub.uni-paderborn.de).
- The inspection of media ordered from the stacks or via interlibrary loan that cannot be borrowed will be possible again(by prior arrangement by e-mail: ortsleihe@ub.uni-paderborn.de).
Changed opening hours in June
The library will be closed on 3 June 2021 (Corpus Christi).
Of course, you will have access to our electronic services such as the catalogue, library account, databases and electronic full texts via WWW during the closing times.
Changed opening hours in May
The library will be closed on 13 May 2021 (Ascension Day) and 24 May 2021 (Whit Monday).
Of course, you will have access to our electronic services such as the catalogue, library account, databases and electronic full texts via WWW during the closing times.
ORCID iD makes scientists and scholars unique. Paderborn University Library recommends the use of an ORCID iD and is setting up an ORCID Centre to provide support
The Paderborn University Library recommends that all researchers at the University set up and use an ORCID iD. This is a globally recognised personal identifier that academics can use to compile and manage information about themselves, such as name (in all variants), institutional affiliation, professional career, research achievements and publications, into a comprehensive and unique personal profile.
In particular, the use of an ORCID iD offers the following advantages:
- Unique traceability: The personal ORCID iD makes it possible to clearly identify and find a researcher internationally. Misclassification of publications and research achievements is prevented - even with name variants, name changes, identical names or different spellings (e.g. with or without umlauts).
- Unambiguous assignment: Publications can be clearly assigned to both scientists and research institutions. Specifying the ORCID iD in a publication ensures that it is taken into account when calculating bibliometric indicators such as citation figures or the h-index.
- Permanent use: The ORCID iD can be used permanently - regardless of employers and research areas - so it remains the same even if a researcher changes affiliation to an institution.
- Simplification of communication with publishers and research funders: More and more publishers and research funders expect their own ORCID iD to be mentioned. In any case, it facilitates and speeds up communication between researchers and publishers and research funders.
Paderborn University is a member of the German ORCID consortium. The University Library acts as an ORCID contact for the University. Through the ORCID Centre it has set up, it offers help and support with questions regarding the institution and handling of an ORCID iD in everyday academic life. In addition, the services offered via the ORCID Centre simplify the creation and maintenance of your own ORCID data record.
More detailed information can be found at: https: //orcid.ub.uni-paderborn.de/
Further service restrictions from 20.04.2021
Due to the current infection figures, the Corona emergency brake provided for in the current Corona Protection Ordinance NRW, § 16, will come into force for the city of Paderborn from 19 April 2021. This stipulates that operations in university libraries will be restricted to the collection and delivery of ordered or automatically collectable media and their return.
From 20 April 2021, the library will only be open Monday to Friday (with the exception of public holidays) from 10:00 to 17:00 for the collection and delivery of ordered or automatically collectable media and their return. The use of workstations and rooms is not permitted.
Changed opening hours at Easter
The library will be closed from Good Friday, 02.04.2021, to Easter Monday, 05.04.2021.
Of course, you will have access to our electronic services such as the catalogue, library account, databases and electronic full texts via WWW during the closing times.
Interlibrary loan requests for journal articles can still be sent directly by e-mail until 31 July
The option for interlibrary loan orders to be delivered directly to customers by email, which has been in place since 25 January 2021 due to a temporary exception, has been extended until 31 July 2021.
Construction work on level 2, installation of psychology monographs
The remodelling work on level 2 is progressing. In the next step, the dust protection wall will be moved, which made it necessary to rearrange some of the monographs in the psychology subject area within the level. As a result, you will now find the signature field HQE to HRL in shelf rows 24 to 28 as before, but the subsequent field HRL to HXP in rows 1 to 13 on level 2.
Refurbishment of the lifts
The lifts in the library building will be renovated over the next few months. During the renovation work, which is likely to take several months, only one lift will be available at any one time. We also ask for your understanding regarding any noise disturbance that may occur.
Service extensions from 22 March 2021
From Monday, 22 March 2021, the library will be open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00 (excluding public holidays).
Individual workstations and rooms will be released for use again to a very limited extent. Initially, a maximum of 50 individual workstations and the individual workrooms can be used at the same time. Individual workstations can be used by all users with a valid library card and can be reserved up to 3 days in advance from Monday, 22 March 2021. The current occupancy of the workstations is visible in the occupancy/reservation system. In the University Library and at the workstations, there is an obligation to wear a medical mask in accordance with the CoronaSchVO.
The use of the microfilm scanner (after prior registration and appointment by e-mail: ortsleihe@ub.uni-paderborn.de) is possible again from 22 March 2021.
The inspection of media ordered from the stacks or via interlibrary loan that cannot be borrowed (by prior arrangement by e-mail: ortsleihe@ub.uni-paderborn.de) will be possible again from 22 March 2021.
From 9 March, the range of services will be extended in accordance with the Corona Protection Ordinance valid from 8 to 28 March 2021.
The open stacks are freely accessible again; it is therefore no longer necessary to order media placed in the open stacks.
The book supervision scanners in the user area are available again.
It is again possible to pay fees by EC card at the automatic pay station.
Further service enhancements are being planned, but implementation may take some time.
With the exception of a few research PCs, PCs and the photocopiers managed by the AStA are still not available in the user area!
The number of users who are allowed to use the library at the same time is limited, so please do not stay in the library longer than necessary. Search for the literature you need before you visit the library and have the relevant shelfmarks to hand!
When entering and leaving the library, you must sign in and out with your library card. Your library card number, name, address, telephone number and the time you entered or left the library will be stored for 4 weeks. The library is thus implementing the ordinance of the state of NRW to protect against new infections with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (Corona Protection Ordinance - CoronaSchVO).
The obligation to wear a medical mask exists regardless of compliance with a minimum distance. Furthermore, all health protection measures must be observed and contacts must be kept to a minimum.
Additional e-books on offer at the university library: Initiative E-Books.NRW of the state government
Due to the current situation, many of the services offered by Paderborn University Library (UB) can unfortunately only be used to a limited extent or not at all.
It is a great advantage that the University Library has been pursuing an offensive e-preferred strategy for many years and uses a large proportion of its acquisition funds for the licensing of databases, electronic journals and e-books. At the beginning of the year, more than 530,000 licensed e-books alone were available to Paderborn University Library users.
This extensive range can now be further expanded thanks to the state government's E-Books.NRW initiative: The state will provide a total of 40 million euros by 2023, which the state's 42 university libraries can use to acquire e-books via the University Library Centre (hbz) - in particular to support digital teaching.
S. MKW press release from 22.01.2021: https://www.mkw.nrw/presse/e-books-nrw
The aim is to conclude state contracts that enable access to e-books from as wide a range of subjects as possible. Licence agreements have already been concluded for e-books from the academic publisher de Gruyter and its partner publishers (e.g. Böhlau, transcript Verlag, ...) with a volume of approx. 85,000 titles and from the provider Preselect, which bundles the e-book offerings of a large number of publishers (e.g. Beltz, Hogrefe, Klett-Cotta, Klostermann, Kohlhammer, Suhrkamp, VDE Verlag, ...) via its platform, with a volume of approx. 20,500 titles.
Both contracts stipulate that a comprehensive selection of well-used titles will be available for further, permanent use after the expiry of a 3-year licence.
Like all titles licensed by the University Library, these e-books are listed in the library catalogue and can be searched via the catalogue and accessed from the campus network or via VPN from home.
Paderborn University Library's digital collections modernised
The Paderborn University Library's Digital Collections(digital.ub.uni-paderborn.de), a joint portal for the publication and presentation of open access publications and retro digitised material, received a functional and visual update at the turn of the year 2020/2021.
The most striking and important new feature is a new responsive design that enables significantly improved use on mobile devices.
Technically, this is a further development of the Visual Library software, which has been used to operate the Paderborn University Library's digital collections, including the publication service, since 2011/2012. The novelty at that time was that the Visual Library software, originally designed for retro-digitisation, was extended by a publication module - a component for the integration of born digital documents - in collaboration between the developer company semantics and Paderborn University Library in close cooperation with the University Library Centre of North Rhine-Westphalia (hbz). With this milestone in the service-oriented provision of Born Digital documents and retro-digitised material under one roof in ONE Open Access portal, Paderborn University Library was and is leading the way and setting the trend for other portals and projects.
Furthermore, it is operated via the 'scan to web hosted by hbz' infrastructure. The Paderborn University Library's digital collections are now integrated into the NOAH project as a portal
State-wide portal for the verification of Open Access content at universities in NRW (NOAH)
The aim of the NOAH project, which has been funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science (MKW) since August 2020 for an initial period of two years, is to create a state-wide "Portal for the verification of open access content at universities in NRW". A beta version of this portal has been available since 21 December 2020(https://noah.nrw).
The project is managed by the NRW University Library Centre (hbz), where NOAH is operated on the basis of the Visual Library software from Walter Nagel and semantics.
The following libraries are involved as pilot libraries: the university libraries of Paderborn, Siegen and Wuppertal, the libraries of the Detmold University of Music and the Cologne University of Music and Dance. In addition, further institutions will make documents available and the circle of clients will be successively expanded.
NOAH aims to bundle the open access publications and other copyright-free materials available at the state's universities, which are increasingly being created at the state's universities but are difficult to find and use, so that they are more visible and more widely used - especially in the context of study, teaching and research at universities in NRW.
NOAH is to be
- be used by the state's university libraries as a university repository and portal for the publication and presentation of retro-digitised material,
- give the state's university libraries the opportunity to import the content of their existing university repositories and the portals of their retro-digitisation systems into NOAH and make it available for use there,
- be used for the integration of open access documents by the hbz, for which a secondary publication as an open access publication is possible after the expiry of an embargo period (e.g. conclusion of a Deep Green state licence) instead of the more inefficient decentralised provision in various local repositories and reference tools of the universities in NRW.
All documents made available via the NOAH portal fulfil high quality standards. Among other things
- they have or receive persistent identifiers (URN, DOI, ...) for permanent referencing,
- the metadata of the documents increasingly contain the ORCID IDs of their authors,
- they can be searched together using a convenient full-text search (OCR).
- all documents are also indexed in the union database and marked in such a way that they can also be indexed in the local catalogues of individual libraries at their request
NOAH is conceptually and technically based entirely on the Digital Collections of Paderborn University Library or the Visual Library (VL) software in the version developed for Paderborn University Library. The NOAH portal is hosted via the 'scan to web hosted by hbz' infrastructure operated by the hbz.
Since the turn of the year, the Paderborn University Library's digital collections have been integrated into the NOAH portal, so that all past and future publications in the digital collections are also an integral part of the NOAH data corpus.
Temporarily possible: Electronic delivery of interlibrary loan copies to users
Due to a temporary exception, interlibrary loan orders for journal articles or sections from books can now be delivered directly to the orderer by e-mail.
If an email address is provided when placing an interlibrary loan order, an ordered article or book section will be sent directly to the orderer by email via a download link or as an attached PDF document.
This exception, which is limited until 31 March 2021, is made possible by a supplementary agreement with the collecting societies (including VG WORT) in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Limited service of the University Library
On the basis of the Corona Protection Ordinance NRW, §6 (4), which is valid from 11 to 31 January 2021, the library must further restrict its services.
It is only open for the collection of ordered media and the return of media on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00.
Ordered media can only be collected on presentation of a valid library card and notification that the media you have ordered is available. Please do not come to the library until you have received notification from us.
It is not permitted to enter the open stacks, use workstations and rooms, research PCs, scanners, photocopiers, checkout machines or similar.
Furthermore, all health protection measures must be observed (e.g. wearing a face mask) and contacts must be kept to a minimum.
Please note the details of our current terms of use.
