On 4 December 2018, Paderborn University Library put a return machine for information media into operation. Here, users can return borrowed media independently. Only information media that are provided and issued at the desk of the local lending department (e.g. interlibrary loans) must still be returned there.

The automated book return is another component of the overall concept of providing self-services, which is intended, among other things, to relieve the library's scarce staff resources of routine mechanical tasks in favour of advisory tasks and the like. Six new self-checkout terminals and a self-collection area were put into operation in August 2018. The cash machines, which users can use to pay outstanding fees themselves, are also part of the concept.

The University Library wants to offer students the best possible conditions for learning and working. It therefore also supports health-promoting measures. Under the guidance of trainers from mein beneFIT@upb.de, students can now get to know and practise small relaxation and concentration exercises in the library.

During a test phase until the end of December, these approximately fifteen-minute 'brain breaks' will be offered every Tuesday and Thursday at 14:00 and 16:00. The meeting point in the library is the transition from level 4 to the new specialised library level 2 in building I.

Libraries at universities in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia regularly evaluate their services in order to optimise them.

In the summer semester of 2017, Paderborn University Library (UB) conducted an online survey of students together with 16 other university libraries in North Rhine-Westphalia. The aim of the campaign was to obtain information from students on how satisfied they are with the services offered by the university library and what their usage preferences and service requests are. Of the approx. 20,000 students at Paderborn University, around 1,800, or approx. 9.2%, took part in the University Library's survey. This response rate is pleasingly high and suitable for deriving reliable trends from the results.

The overall result of the survey shows a very positive picture for Paderborn University Library. 85% of the participating students stated that they were completely satisfied or quite satisfied with the services offered by the library. This is a very good result, also compared to the state-wide satisfaction rate of 83% for all university libraries in NRW.

The training programme was revised for the 2018/19 winter semester. Suggestions from last year's student survey were incorporated into the revision. In response to students' requests, the University Library now offers primarily short events, which always include a unit in which students can consolidate what they have learnt.

On the new training page you will find our complete programme at a nutshell. You have the choice between two entry options:

• via the title of the event

• via the "Training dates" (here you can also filter the programme by date, topic or target group).

Two new training courses have been added to the programme: "What is Primo Central?" and the series "Databases explained in brief". We also offer a counselling service for specific questions about Citavi.

For groups of five or more people, you can put together an event tailored to your needs from the individual modules.

The 'Notebook Café', located in the entrance area of the University Library, was set up at the beginning of September 2002 as a student-organised institution of the Centre for Information and Media Technologies (IMT).

It was created in response to the widespread use of notebooks at the time and the resulting need for counselling and training for students who were less familiar with computers and the Internet.

After almost exactly 16 years, the Notebook Café has now moved to the new Building I and can be found in Room I 0.401 since 25 September.

The refurbishment of the carpet on level 4 has been completed. The media stocks are now in their new location. The new shelving arrangement makes access to the new specialised library, Level 2 in Building I, easy to find.

The "English and American Studies" media collection is located on Level 2, Building I. This is also where the first workstations have been provisionally institutionalised.

Paderborn University Library is opening a new self-collection area in its entrance area on 28 August 2018.

In this freely accessible field, users can pick up information media that they have previously reserved in the catalogue or ordered from the stacks. The media in the self-collection area are organised by shelfmark.

Six new self-checkout terminals, which are also located in this field, are available for borrowing.

Orders from other libraries (interlibrary loans) as well as orders for DVDs, CD-ROMs, special stocks from the stacks, didactic materials, literature on microfiche and microfilm as well as media for placement in reference collections etc. will continue to be made available via the local circulation desk; as before, padlocks (lockers) can also be borrowed there.

Users will be informed by the library by e-mail when and where (self-collection area or local circulation desk) the ordered information media will be available for collection for a period of 7 working days.

If you have any problems, the staff at the local lending desk will be happy to help.

The refurbishment of the carpeting in the first construction phase has been completed. The media collections 'Romance Studies' and 'Other Philologies' are now in their new, permanent location on level 4.

For the second construction phase (front field of level 4), the scanners and seminar equipment have also been moved to the newly renovated part of the level. The carpet will now be replaced in the vacated front part of level 4, which will probably cause noise pollution again.

The 'German Studies' media collection will be gradually relocated to Building I and temporarily set up there.

The 'General and Comparative Linguistics and Literature' media collection will remain in Building I until the renovation work has been completed.

The holdings in Building I are freely accessible.

As part of a cooperation between the Writing Competence Centre and the University Library, the Writing Competence Centre has been offering student writing advice every Wednesday from 13:00 to 14:00 at the library's Information Centre since 2 August 2017.

Due to the good response, this service will be extended by one hour from 25 July 2018, every Wednesday from 12:00 to 14:00.

Students writing their term papers or theses often not only have questions about searching for literature in catalogues and databases, but also increasingly have questions about academic writing. In order to provide students with quick and targeted support, the Competence Centre's 'Student Writing Advice' service is located in the library as a place of work and study. The service is aimed at students of all faculties and semesters.

With the start of the examination period around the end of the summer semester, the demand for workstations in the library increases significantly. In order to avoid seat reservations and to support a fair allocation of workstations, we offer you break discs in our workstation areas, which function like car parking discs: When you leave your workstation, you set the start of your break. After 30 minutes, or 60 minutes at lunchtime, the space may be occupied by other library users.

As announced, the media collections 'General and Comparative Linguistics and Literature', 'Romance Studies' and 'Other Philologies' have now been moved to Building I for the replacement of the carpeting in three construction phases on Level 4.

The carpeting in the first construction phase is currently being renovated. A dust protection wall has been erected to shield this field.

From 31 July, the media collections 'Romance Studies' and 'Other Philologies' will be moved back to level 4 of the library and set up in their new, permanent location. Subsequently, the front field of level 4 (formerly 'current journals', 'scanners', 'seminar apparatus' etc.) will be renovated in the second construction phase. At the same time, the 'German Studies' media collection will be relocated to Building I so that the carpet can be replaced there as well.

We will inform you about the locations of the (temporarily) relocated media stocks by means of appropriate notices.

Last week, the monograph and journal collections 'General' were moved from level 4 to the entrance level of the library; the new location is already displayed in the catalogue.

Paderborn University Library has been offering all Paderborn University students and staff a free campus licence for the reference management programme Citavi since 2008.

Users who use the reference management programme Citavi via a licence key or via the free version can now download the new version 6.

You can find technical information on the version change in the Citavi manual.

Version 6 makes it possible to store projects in a cloud and work in a team without a shared drive.

You can find a complete overview of all new features in the manual under"What's new?".

An overview of changes and functionalities that are no longer offered in version 6 can be found in the manual under "What has changed?".

There is no obligation to upgrade to version 6.

Especially if you work with a word processing programme other than Word (e.g. Libre or OpenOffice), you should not upgrade to version 6 yet, as Citavi 6 does not currently offer the option of citing in a document with other word processing programmes.

The new Copyright Knowledge Society Act (UrhWissG) came into force on 1 March 2018. Section 52a UrhG no longer applies; Sections 60a and 60c UrhWissG are now relevant for the provision of documents in electronic seminar apparatuses of the university library and on university learning platforms.

The UrhWissG allows password-protected documents to be made available to course participants in electronic seminar apparatuses or on learning platforms:

• up to 15% of works (previously a maximum of 12% or no more than 100 pages of a work),
• individual articles from specialised journals/scientific journals as well as individual illustrations or similar small works (as before),
• so-called out-of-print works (works published before 1 January 1966 in books, journals, newspapers, magazines or other publications, which are in the physical holdings of the University Library and which are out of print in bookshops, i.e. for which there is no longer a publishing offer) in their entirety (new),
• up to 15% of works intended for educational use in schools (textbooks) (previously only possible with the consent of the copyright holder).

Printing and saving the uploaded documents is still permitted.

It is not permitted to make them available in seminar apparatuses or on learning platforms

• of articles from newspapers or journals that are not explicitly specialised journals (so-called 'newsstand journals').

The new UrhWissG stipulates that the appropriate remuneration for the provision of documents must be calculated on a flat-rate basis or by means of a representative sample of usage. There is no individual reporting of documents made available in seminar apparatuses or on learning platforms - as was hotly debated in 2016. The exact modalities of billing between KMK and VG Wort are currently still being negotiated.

All provisions of the law are to be evaluated after four years. If the legislator does not take action by then at the latest, the new UrhWissG would automatically expire in 2023.

Since 6 December 2017, Paderborn University employees have been able to apply for their combined service/library card or library card via the IMT service portal: serviceportal.uni-paderborn.de.

After logging in to the IMT service portal with your university account, go to the "Administration" menu item and select "Apply for my service/library card" or "Apply for a library card" in the "Service/library card" category.

Once the application for a library card has been completed, the applying employee will receive an email informing them as soon as their card has been issued and can be collected from the counter of the library's local lending desk (Monday-Friday: 7:30-19:00 and Saturday: 9:00-17:00).

An identity card must be presented when collecting items. If the library card is to be collected by a third party, the person collecting it must present a signed authorisation certificate and their own identity card in addition to the identity card of the requesting employee.

This innovation is the result of a long-term joint project between the Centre for Information and Media Technologies (IMT), Department 6 Information Technology Procedures of the Central Administration and the University Library (UB). Whereas previously the data required for service/library cards, among other things, was collected several times, careful data exchange now ensures that the data is highly synchronised and up-to-date.
