08-21 July 2010 - Frauen in Naturwissenschaft und Technik
Today, girls are more frequently represented at grammar schools than boys and they often achieve better qualifications. However, when choosing their subjects, they often follow a gender stereotype in which technical, technology-related and scientific professions are rarely considered. As a result of this decision, such professions have a lower proportion of women and there are hardly any role models and identification opportunities for girls and young women.
The lack of representation of women in the natural sciences has a historical dimension. As a rule, the processes of experimentation and discovery are attributed to men. However, women have always played an important role in the natural sciences. Their history is still largely unknown today, even though many of their achievements were just as moving or ground-breaking as those of their male colleagues.
The exhibition "Frauen in Naturwissenschaft und Technik" presents portraits of 23 important women from the 17th century to the present day. These women have played a significant role in science, but their contributions have mostly remained unknown. The aim of the exhibition is to document women scientists and their lives and research in a world of science that is connoted as male.
The exhibition can be visited during the library's opening hours:
Monday to Friday: 7.30-24.00,
Saturday and Sunday: 9.00-21.00.

15 June - 6 July 2010 - "Biografie - ein Generationenprojekt"
From 15 June to 6 July, the foyer of Paderborn University Library will be showing exhibits on the topic of "Biography - a generational project" by students of the Institute of Education Studies, which were developed as part of project seminars. The exhibition includes paintings, photo collages, sculptures and a few more surprises.
Theoretical principles on the complex of age, biographies and intergenerational work were put into practice by the students in a project. The "life pictures" developed with a person from another generation (from family or acquaintances) were created based on specific questions about the past they have experienced.
The students would like to present the results of their work at an opening event in the foyer of the University Library on Tuesday, 15 June 2010 at 4.00 pm. During this time, they will be available for discussion.
The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the University Library: Mon to Fri: 7.30am - midnight, Sat to Sun: 9.00am - 9.00pm.

02-28 February 2010 - "Der Klang der 1920er Jahre"
"Der Klang der 1920er Jahre" is the title of an exhibition that can be seen in the foyer of Paderborn University Library from 2 to 28 February.
What did people in the 1920s use to entertain themselves? What did the technical development of the phonograph mean for the preservation of sound? How did radio and cinema revolutionise the entertainment industry? Which stars were there in the "golden" 20s? There are answers to these and other exciting questions in the exhibition. A real wax cylinder can be admired and visitors can listen to the most famous hits, chansons and operetta songs of the time and take a look at the wardrobes of Richard Tauber and Fritzi Massary.
The exhibition was created by seven students on the Bachelor's/Master's degree programme in Musicology at Paderborn University and the Detmold University of Music under the direction of Prof. Dr. Rebecca Grotjahn and Marleen Hoffmann.
To mark the opening of the exhibition on 2 February, Freiburg musicologist Dr. Nils Grosch will give a lecture on "Kurt Weill and the commercial music theatre of the 1920s" at 6 p.m. in the Notebook Café in the entrance area of the University Library.
The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the University Library:
Mon. to Fri. 7.30am - midnight,
Sat. to Sun. 9.00am - 9.00pm
