'Who were Otto and Elise Hampel? - a reading for two speakers'. This is the title of a reading on Friday, 12 July 2019 at 17:00 in the Paderborn University Library, which Christian Winterstein will give together with Dr. Friedrich Markewitz from the Institute of German and Comparative Literature.

The reading will shed light on the Berlin resistance fighters and their fight against the Nazi dictatorship from the perspective of the surviving Gestapo and Nazi justice files and from the perspective of the literary treatment of their fate in the novel "Jeder stirbt für sich allein" by Hans Fallada (published posthumously in 1947). The history of the novel's creation, passages from "Jeder stirbt für sich allein", the form and content of the resistance writings and the question of what we can learn from the Hampels today are at the centre of the reading. A differentiated picture of the working-class couple and the times in which they lived will be conveyed. During the reading, some of the surviving postcards and flyers will be shown.

The reading is the result of work on the exhibition project "Otto and Elise Hampel - Karte bitte wandern lassen!", which has been touring the educational, cultural and museum landscape since 2015 and is on display at Paderborn University Library until 23 July.

Remembering a working-class couple who resisted National Socialism.

From September 1940 to September 1942, Otto and Elise Hampel used postcards and flyers to call for resistance against the Nazi regime and for an end to the war. The working-class couple distributed over 200 resistance leaflets in stairwells, letterboxes and doorways - mainly near their home in Berlin-Wedding. Elise and Otto Hampel were denounced in September 1942 and arrested the following month. The "People's Court" sentenced them both to death in January 1943. They were murdered at the Plötzensee execution site on 8 April 1943.

Christian Winterstein (Bremen) is now commemorating the courageous couple with an exhibition in Paderborn. The exhibition, which can be seen from 4 to 23 July in the University Library, focuses on photographic reproductions of the surviving underground writings. In addition, everyday photographs of the Hampels and documents of their persecutors from the surviving Gestapo and Nazi justice files will also be on display. The exhibition sheds light on the Hampels' lives, their motivation for joining the active resistance and their deaths in Plötzensee.

With his exhibition, Christian Winterstein wants to remind us that there were people who, in a social environment characterised by pressure to conform and barbaric rule, did not lose their sense of justice; who, alone and on their own, found the courage and hope to resist.

What can we learn from the Hampels today? This is a central question of the exhibition that Christian Winterstein has been touring the educational and cultural landscape with since 2015. Since 2018, the exhibition has been sent on tour by the Hans-Fallada-Gesellschaft e.V. This is no coincidence. Hans Fallada dealt with the fate of the Hampels in his novel 'Jeder stirbt für sich allein' (published posthumously in 1947).

The Paderborn University Library is the ninth station of the exhibition. The exhibitor is Prof Dr Britt-Marie Schuster from the Institute of German and Comparative Literature, who heads the project'Heterogeneous Resistance Cultures: Linguistic Practices of Resistance from 1933 to 1945', which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The idea to bring the exhibition to Paderborn came from her research assistant Katrin Schubert, who is writing her doctoral dissertation on the resistance writings of Otto and Elise Hampel.

The exhibition will be opened on 3 July 2019 at 17:00. All interested parties are cordially invited to attend.

Under the title "Pläne und Träume – neu zugewanderte Jugendliche erzählen", the project "Betreutes Berufsfeldpraktikum: Sprachbegleitung Geflüchteter" of the Institute of German and Comparative Literature, Department of German as a Foreign and Second Language at Paderborn University is exhibiting portraits of newly immigrated and refugee vocational students in the university library.

The expressive portraits, which were created by Paderborn art photographer Juan Zamalea, provide an insight into the lives of the young new immigrants. In the pictures, the young people reveal what concerns them and what goals they are pursuing in their new home in Germany.

A short video will also be shown as part of the exhibition. This was created on the basis of interviews with the pupils, conceived and realised by a student teacher who completed her internship in the "Language Support for Refugees" project. Thomas Stolcis from the "Media and Education" profile programme at Paderborn University provided support with the video shooting and editing.

The exhibition will be opened on Wednesday 8 May at 15:00 in the entrance area of Paderborn University Library. It can be visited until 26 May during the opening hours of the University Library: Monday to Friday: 7:30 am to midnight, Saturday to Sunday: 9:00 am to 9:00 pm (closed on public holidays).

Once again, the University Library would like to inspire students, staff and visitors with poetry and 'give the gift of poetry' with selected volumes of poetry from 2018 and 2019.

A small exhibition presents volumes of poetry in German and translated into German that poetry experts from the German Academy for Language and Poetry, the Poetry Cabinet Foundation, the House of Poetry, the German Library Association and the German Literature Fund have deemed to be particularly outstanding.

The exhibition can be visited from 29 April to 8 May 2019 during the opening hours of the University Library in the foyer: Monday to Friday: 7:30 am to midnight, Saturday to Sunday: 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Students from the subject area of art and people with disabilities from the Pontanus-Carré, Bethel.regional meeting centre explored Paderborn University through photography during the 2018 summer semester. The resulting photographs are now on display at Paderborn University Library.

It was the second inclusive project that both groups have realised with the aim of initiating encounters between people with and without disabilities. The focus was on the exchange of individual perceptions and the different focus on a common object - Paderborn University.

At the beginning of the year, the University Library is showing photographs by Paderborn photographer Oliver Kleibrink. Kleibrink spent nine months immersed in the lives of young prisoners at Hövelhof Prison. In his photo reportage, he explores the question of the extent to which everyday prison life influences the willingness and ability of inmates in open detention. The photographs provide answers, offer extraordinary insights and document the traces that can be found. They also reveal the difficulties faced by both prisoners and staff at Hövelhof Prison.

In sensitive images, the photographer gets very close to his protagonists, accompanying them even in private, sometimes intimate situations and yet preserving their dignity. He is never interested in exposing them (they remain unrecognised to the viewer), but rather in sensitively capturing their emotional states as a testimony to a substantial confrontation and appreciation of his counterpart.

The photographs on display can be found in the illustrated book "SPUREN - das Leben junger Strafgefangener in der JVA Hövelhof" (Traces - the lives of young prisoners in Hövelhof Prison), edited by Florian Söll and published this year. The exhibition is closely related to Dr Stephanie Willeke's German studies seminar 'Camps and Prison in Literature', in which Oliver Kleibrink will present his work as a guest.
