Open Access with publishers

Paderborn University also promotes Open Access as part of the licence agreements concluded by the University Library with publishers. By participating in so-called transformation contracts with a publish&read component, members of the University have the opportunity to publish Open Access in journals of the respective licence packages either free of charge or for a discounted fee.

The "publish&read" concept initially means read access to the content of the licence package provided by the publisher for members of the University (read). In addition, members of the University can publish their scientific research results open access in journals in the publisher's portfolio (publish).

In transformation agreements, the publication fees for publications in corresponding electronic journals are usually part of the licence fees, which are paid by the university. In individual cases, they are invoiced separately to the university as the licence holder. Authors therefore do not receive invoices from the publisher for their article processing charges.

If APC costs for articles in Gold Open Access journals are invoiced separately to the university as licensee within the framework of transformation agreements, the APC costs may be financed from the university's Open Access Publication Fund. For publications in Gold Open Access journals, the principle still applies that own publication funds from third-party funded projects must be spent first. In addition, as with all other Open Access articles in Gold Open Access journals, funding is possible from the OA Publication Fund; in general, funding is capped at 2,000 euros net (plus VAT). Any costs exceeding this amount will - as before - be invoiced to the authors via the University Library.

The principle that own publication funds from third-party funded projects must be spent first also applies here. In addition, funding from the OA publication fund is capped at 2,000 euros net (plus VAT). Any costs exceeding this amount will be invoiced to you by the University Library as before.
